Discover Anraku-ji Temple in Northern Higashiyama, Kyoto. A hidden gem off the Path of Philosophy famed for autumn maple foliage, a historic thatch-roof gate & tranquil gardens.
Another intimate charmer of a temple tucked just off the scenic Path of Philosophy, Anraku-ji comes highly recommended for travelers fortunate enough to visit during its brief seasonal openings.

Positioned on a gentle slope just above the Path of Philosophy, and only a short walk south of the renowned Hōnen-in Temple, Anraku-ji consistently ranks among Kyoto’s most photographed destinations during the autumn foliage season—and for excellent reason. The moss-dappled, maple-lined stone approach leads to a beautifully preserved thatch-roof entry gate that looks lifted straight from a classical ink painting. Once inside the grounds, visitors are greeted by a meticulously raked stroll garden framed by carefully pruned pines and seasonal blooms, while the main hall houses a deeply serene, historically significant wooden statue of Amida Buddha that radiates quiet reverence.

The sole drawback to experiencing Anraku-ji is its highly restricted and somewhat complex visiting schedule, which can feel almost deliberately exclusive. To help you plan your itinerary, the temple welcomes visitors only during these specific seasonal windows:

- Saturdays and Sundays during the first two weeks of April
- Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays during the first two weeks of May
- Saturdays and Sundays of the last two weeks of May and first two weeks of June
- Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays throughout November
- Saturdays and Sundays during the first two weeks of December
