Warajiya: Kyoto’s Oldest Unagi Restaurant

Warajiya

With over 400 years of history, Warajiya boasts an eel pedigree unlike any other in Kyoto. Located conveniently near Keihan Shichijo Station, it is the perfect culinary stop before or after visiting the nearby Sanjusangendo Temple.

The name “Warajiya” translates to “straw sandals,” reflecting its centuries-old heritage. While most Kyoto eel restaurants specialize in grilled kabayaki, Warajiya is unique for specializing in eel hotpot (unabe) and eel congee (uzousui). In fact, they offer only one set menu: the “Uzousui Course,” where the “U” stands for unagi (eel) featured in every dish.

The meal begins with Unabe (Eel Hotpot), a comforting and fragrant dish. The eel is grilled, deboned, and simmered in a savory broth with local Kujo leeks, seitan, and noodles. It is traditionally enjoyed with a dash of sansho pepper for a zesty kick.

Next comes the signature Uzousui (Eel Congee), a rich egg porridge packed with tender unagi, shiitake mushrooms, green onions, burdock root, rice cakes, and carrots. Though hearty, the flavors blend beautifully into a ultimate comfort food experience. This warming course is especially popular during Kyoto’s chilly winter months.

Given its prime location just a 3-minute walk from Shichijo Station, Warajiya is an ideal sightseeing lunch spot. We recommend pairing your meal with a morning visit to the stunning Sanjusangendo Temple.
